General Notes

THE DESIGN HAS BEEN PREPARED FOR CSA CERTIFICATION UNDER THE REQUIREMENTS OF CSA C22.2 No. 206-M1987(R1999) – LIGHTING POLES. SCOPE AND LIMITATIONS OF THIS DESIGN ARE AS FOLLOWS:

  1. DESIGN STANDARD: AASHTO LTS-4 “STANDARD SPECIFICATIONS FOR STRUCTURAL SUPPORTS FOR HIGHWAY SIGNS, LUMINAIRES AND TRAFFIC SIGNALS” (2001). WIND LOADING IN ACCORDANCE WITH APPENDIX C: ALTERNATE METHOD FOR WIND PRESSURES USING A GUST FACTOR OF 1.3.
  2. DESIGN REFERENCES: CSA S6-00 CANADIAN HIGHWAY BRIDGE DESIGN CODE.
  3. REFER TO POLE LISTINGS FOR MAXIMUM EPA (SQ. FT.) FOR EACH POLE CONFIGURATION AND WIND VELOCITY. MAXIMUM EPAs LISTED FOR COMPARISON TO TOTAL POLE-TOP MOUNTED EPA INCLUDING ALL LUMINAIRES, MOUNTING FIXTURES AND ACCESSORIES. EPA RATINGS ARE FOR LUMINAIRE SUPPORT ONLY. NO ALLOWANCE FOR BANNERS, FLAGS OR SIGNAGE IS INCLUDED.
  4. LUMINAIRE WEIGHT ASSUMED AT 25 lbs./sq.ft. OF EPA.
  5. DESIGN ICE ACCUMULATION: 0.59” (15mm) AND 18 lbs./sq.ft. OF EPA.
  6. DESIGN BASED ON LUMINAIRE MOUNTING HEIGHT MAXIMUM 2’-6” (750mm) ABOVE POLE TOP. THE CENTROID OF THE TOTAL EPA (INCLUDING LUMINAIRES, MOUNTING FIXTURES, AND ACCESSORIES) IS ASSUMED TO BE WITHIN 2’-6” OF THE POLE TOP (NORMAL POLE HEIGHT).
  7. FOR ECCENTRIC MOUNTING, THE MAXIMUM ECCENTRICITY OF THE EPA IS ASSUMED TO BE 2’-0” (600 mm). THIS CORRESPONDS TO A SYMETRIC MOUNTING OF MAXIMUM 13’-0 (4 m) OVERALL WIDTH. FOR ECCENTRIC MOUNTING AT EPAs LESS THAN THE MAXIMUM SPECIFIED. THE ECCENTRICITY, e, MAY BE INCREASED IN PROPORTION TO THE REDUCTION IN EPA TO MAINTAIN THE SAME NET e AS FOLLOWS:
    MAX EPA: 10 sq. ft. e: 2’-0” NET e: 10 x 2 = 20
    Actual EPA: 5 sq. ft. e: 4’-0” NET e: 5 x 4 = 20
    Actual EPA: 4 sq. ft. e: 5’-0” NET e: 4 x 5 = 20
  8. DESIGN FATIGUE CATEGORY: CATEGORY III – “CANTILEVERED SUPPORT STRUCTURES INSTALLED AT OTHER (LOW RISK) LOCATIONS”:
    • MAXIMUM HEIGHT: 100 ft (30m)
    • MAXIMUM ROADWAY SPEED: 60 km/h (35 mph)
    • MAXIMUM AVERAGE DAILY TRAFFIC: 10,000 ADT (ONE DIRECTION)
    • MAXIMUM AVERAGE DAILY TRUCK TRAFFIC: 1,000 ADTT (ONE DIRECTION)
    • MAXIMUM MEAN ANNUAL WIND SPEED: 5 m/s (11 mph)

    GROUND MOUNTING OF THE POLES IS ASSUMED. SPECIAL CONDITIONS AND WIND REGIONS REQUIRE SPECIAL CONSIDERATION AND ARE NOT INCLUDED IN THIS ANALYSIS. SUCH SPECIAL CONDITIONS INCLUDE:

    MOUNTING ON STRUCTURES, COASTAL AREAS, HURRICANE ZONES, MOUNTAIN RANGES AND THEIR FOOTHILLS, OTHER HILLS, ESCARPMENTS, ADJACENT TO SIGNIFICANT BODIES OF WATER, OR FOR USE TO SUPPORT BANNERS, SIGNAGE OR FLAGS.

MATERIALS

  1. ALL PLATE TO CONFORM TO CSA G40.21-98 GRADE 50W UNLESS NOTED OTHERWISE.
  2. ALL SQUARE HOLLOW STRUCTURAL SECTIONS TO CONFORM TO CSA G40.21-98 GRADE 50W CLASS C. SUBSTITUTION USING CSA G40.21-98 GRADE 50 CLASS H IS PERMITTED. SUBSTITUTION USING ASTM A500 CLASS C IS NOT PERMITTED.
  3. ALL ROUND HOLLOW STRUCTUREAL SECTIONS TO CONFORM TO ASTM A500 CLASS C. CSA G40.21-98 GRADE 50W CLASS C. SUBSTITUTION USING CSA G40.21-98 GRADE 50W CLASS C OR CLASS H IS PERMITTED.
  4. ANCHOR BOLTS TO BE THREADED FORM BAR STOCK CONFORMING TO CSA G40.21-98 GRADE 50W (Fy = 50 ksi (350 MPa))
  5. PIPE TENONS, WHERE PROVIDED, TO BE ASTM A53 SCHEDULE 40 WALL THICKNESS UNLESS NOTED OTHERWISE.
  6. GALVANIZED FINISH:

    WHERE REQUIRED, POLES TO BE GALVNIZED FINISHED TO CONFORM TO CSA G164*W92 APPLIED NOT LESS THAN 610 grams per square metre TO A MINIMUM NOMINAL THICKNESS OF 87 microns

    SUBSEQUENT FINISH PAINTING OR POWDER COATING TO BE SPECIFIED BY THE OWNER WHERE REQUIRED FOR COLOUR AND APPEARNCE.

    PAINTED FINISH:

    • COMMERCIAL BLAST CLEAN TO SSPC-SP6.
    • APPLY INORGANIC AINC PRIMER. MINIMUM FILM THICKNESS: 63-75 micrometres (2.5-3 mils DRY).
    • FINISH WITH HIGH BUILD EPOXY. MINIMUM FILM THICKNESS: 75-100 micrometres (3-4 mils DRY)

    CARE AND MAINTENANCE

    PROPER CARE AND MAINTENANCE IS THE RESPONDIBILITY OF THE OWNER. PROPER CARE AND MAINTENANCE SHOULD INCLUDE INITIAL INSPECTIONS AND SUBSEQUENT YEARLY INSPECTIONS FOR STRUCTURAL DAMAGE, INCLUDING IMPACT DAMAGE, WELD FAILURE, MISSING OR LOOSE BOLTS AND NUTS, EXCESSIVE CORROSION OR COATING DAMAGE, EXCESSIVE SETTLEMENT. STRUCTURAL BEHAVIOUR SHOULD ALSO BE OBSERVED FOR ANY EVIDENCE OF ECCESSIVE VIBRATION OR DEFLECTION THAY MAY INDICATE UNUSUAL LOCAL CONDITIONS WHICH COULD RESULT IN FATIGUE DAMAGE OR FAILURE.

    WELDING

    • ALL WELDING TO BE PERFORMED BY A FABRICATOR CERTIFIED TO THE REQUIREMENTS OF CSA W47.1-03- DIV. 1 OR 2 AND IN ACCORDANCE WITH CSA W59-03 USING E49XX ELECCTRODES PER W59-03. ALL WELDS SHALL BE VISUALLY EXAMINED TO THE REQUIREMENTS OF CLAUSE 12 – “CYCLICALLY LOADED STRUCTURES” AS REQUIRED BY W59.
    • ALL THIRD PARTY WELD INSPECTION TO BE PERFORMED BY A FIRM CERTIFIED CSA W178.1-02. INSPECTION SHALL INCLUDE EXAMINATION OF WELD PROCEDURES AND WELDER QUALIFICATIONS.
    • LONGITUDINAL SEAM WELDS: PARTIAL PENTRATION GROOVE WELDS – MIN 60% EXCEPT AT SHOP SPLICES (SEE NOTES “SHOP SPLICES”).
    • SHOP SPICES: CIRCUMFERENTIAL WELDS (“SHOP SPLICES”) AND LONGITUDINAL SEAM WELDS WITHIN 6” (150mm) OF CIRCUMFERENTIAL WELDS SHALL BE FULL PENETRATION GROOVE WELDS.
